Industrial visit to ASAHI INDIA GLASS Ltd. by BBA Students on 23 November 2007.

An industrial trip was organized on 23 November 2007 to ASAHI INDIA GLASS LTD, Roorkee under the  dynamic leadership of Mr. Sanjay Thapa and Mr. Srideshwar Patra twenty seven students of BBA III from OIMT. The objective of the visit was to get   acquainted with the management administration and technical aspects of AIS glass industry which is the largest manufacturer and supplier of automotive  in the safety glass and is, in fact, one of the largest in the field in Asia. AIS Float Glass is the leading manufacturer of international quality floatglass in the country prior to its merger with AIS, it was known as Float glass India Ltd. It meets over 81% automotive glass requirement of the Indian passenger car industry.

The students observed with keen interest the glass making process in the furnace at the high temperature varying from 1500 degree centigrade-1800 degree centigrade.They also noted how the glass was cut into pieces of various sizes and also the packaging. Mr BALWANT SINGH, Security and fire officer, AIS guided students and gave them relevant information about the plant.

They keenly observed the washing packaging and cutting area. He narrated at length how the various raw material are used in making glass.

The next section was the mirror section Mr Singh told us the chemicals used in mirror glass were silver, paint, paciwater, redtail and sericiderer and students also keenly observed the washing area as well as the packaging area.

Mr Balwant also referred to the section where the automobile glasses were supposed to be manufactured which was under construction. Students were also informed that the unit produces 700 tonnes of glass per day with emphasis on that once the production started it has to completed irrespective of the production for the market take off, they consumed 132KW power per day,  only 2-3 percent of the glass was wasted, rest was recycled and they transported their products by roads mainly focusing on the northern territory of the country.

On the behalf of  the entire  group, I [SANJAY THAPA] along with two student of BBA-III [VAISHALI MANWAL and AKSHAT GOYAL ]  had an interview with  Mr.DULIP MANIE, HEAD, HR , ASAHI INDIA GLASS LTD, who explained all the queries in detail how the year 2006-07 was a breakthrough year for  AIS. It marked the commissioning of the second float glass plant of AIS at Roorkee on the 1st of January, 2007. Of the largest integrated glass plant in the country set up by their company at Roorkee in the state of UTTARAKHAND.

The integrated glass plant has the state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities for float glass, reflective glass, mirror, automotive safety glass architectural processed glass. With its autoglass and architectural glass processing facility getting commissioned soon the benefits of the plants will start showing in near future. This plant is a critical fit to their strategy of building value chain and scales with forward and backward linkages,which will significantly help AIS in realizing operational synergies and reducing cost.He also gave us highlights of the industry since AIS initially incorporated as Indian Auto Safety Glass Pvt Ltd in 1983-84 to present day.
